Parts of a Dune

There are four different parts of a dune. First comes the beach.  There are no plants and virtually no animals that live on the beach, however, shore birds, flies, beetles and other scavengers stop by  to scavenge fish carcasses and insects that wash up on shore.  Next comes the foredune.  This houses the pioneer plants that help the dune start to form.  After that comes the trough and the blowout. Here bushes and plant seedlings grow.  Some trees like Junipers also grow here.  There is one exception to this and that is a blowout.   A blowout occurs when plant life is destroyed causing the sand to drift away.  This creates almost a large crater and it slowly destroys the dune. Finally, the last stage of a dune is the backdune.  Here is where the larger trees grow and most animals live.
