The dunes are effected greatly by the Great Lakes.  The glaciers that formed the Great Lakes brought the primary elements for the sand dunes.  The wind off of the Great Lakes also help form the sand dunes.  Without the source of deep ground water from the lake some plants would not be able to grow.  Thus causing some animals to not be able to live in the dune ecosystem.  As one can see the Great Lakes play a great role in the sand dunes of Michigan.
