Marram grass is one of the key factors in a growing sand dune. There are a lot of characteristics of this plant to make it well suited for this environment. A rhizome of marram can be relocated, (dug up and moved by animals, swept away by the wind, etc.) and start a new plant growing. This helps to spread this species quick and in great numbers. Another trait of this plant is when the sand accumulates, it sends out new rhizomes, which then send out new shoots, where the process starts all over again. A third characteristic of this plant is it has a complex underground root system, which protects it from most of the regular minor breezes from the lake. A fourth is the long leaves that are curled at the edges to catch rain and prevent further loss of water in the arid climate of the beach. A fifth characteristic of marram grass is the waxy leaves that also help that plant maintain water in its system.
